John Baker: Stonehedge founder, John Baker, is a Health Canada licensed bioprospector and plant breeder for hemp. He is a frequent presenter at conferences, symposia and industry-focused events and has served as an expert witness on industrial hemp for U.S. state legislatures striving to open this market in that country. In addition to his own plant breeding program in Ontario, Mr. Baker is also under contract for plant breeding services in Manitoba and oversaw part of the 2007 plant breeding program for the Ontario Hemp Alliance. Through his research program, Mr. Baker has nurtured the development of a group of growers in the Quinte-Northumberland-Prince Edward County area, and has refined agronomic practices to increase prospects for success in large-scale agricultural production. Mr. Baker has also been involved in regional economic development in Eastern Ontario (www.elorin.ca) and the introduction of pilot scale technologies such as supercritical CO2 extraction at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario.
Mr. Baker has participated in three trade missions to Europe in the past four years (as recently as April 2007) and has been part of Ontario’s host team for several visits by European representatives in the same time frame. He also attended the 2006 World Congress in Industrial Bioprocessing and Biotechnology in Toronto to build linkages to organizations with interests in biomaterials, biochemicals, and biofuels. Mr. Baker was a guest panel speaker at the World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing in April 2008 and the 6th Annual ELORIN Conference: Biofibres and Building in Trenton, Ontario in August 2008. He was also a guest speaker at the European Industrial Hemp Association in November 2007, with follow up meetings in Ireland and Hungary. The Upper Canada hemp germplasm discovered by Baker has gained a great deal of international attention.
